Arsene Wenger Extends Contract with Arsenal

After months of speculation, the fate of Arsenal manager, Arsene Wenger, has finally been revealed – and the decision by the club’s manager may anger quite a few fans.

The club announced on Wednesday that Wenger, who has been with the club for 21 years, has signed a new two-year contract with The Gunners.

Arsenal has just come off a particularly lackluster season, having had to deal with several setbacks and weak performances. Many fans and critics blamed Wenger, calling for his sacking since the start of the year.

However, Arsenal club management said that they still firmly believe that Wenger is the best person for the job.

“Our ambition is to win the Premier League and other major trophies in Europe…It’s what the fans, players, staff, manager and board expect and we won’t rest until that is achieved…Arsene is the best person to help us make that happen. He has a fantastic track record and has our full backing,” majority shareholder, Stan Kroenke said.

Arsenal Chief Executive, Ivan Gazidis, reiterated Kroenke’s stance on keeping Wenger, saying that there is no point in firing someone who does a good job.

“I think in football, the judgements are so black and white that often, if you don’t fire your manager, then you’re seen as being unambitious. I think that’s ludicrous…You don’t fire good people, you don’t fire people who are world-class, you don’t fire people who are driven to improve.”

As for Wenger, the 67-year-old said that he is excited to stay with the club.

“I love this club and I am looking forward to the future with optimism and excitement. We are looking at what we do well and how we can be stronger everywhere…This is a strong group of players and with some additions we can be even more successful,” he said.
