Weah Wins Liberia Election

Former football star, George Weah, has been elected the new president of Liberia.

The 1996 FIFA World Player of the Year won Liberia’s presidential run-off, with a projected 61.5% of the vote, the country’s election commission said on Thursday.

The former AC Milan striker beat current Vice President, Joseph Boakai, who took 38.5% of the vote.

Weah won when Liberians went to the polls in October, but did not secure the required 50% of the vote for an outright victory, leading to a presidential run-off.

Weah, who has played for Chelsea and Manchester City, is the first and only African player to have won both FIFA’s World Player of the Year trophy and the Ballon d’Or.

Weah first ran for Liberia’s presidency in 2005. He formed the Congress for Democratic Change, but was defeated by current president, Ellen Johnson Sirleaf.

In 2011, Weah came second as a vice presidential candidate.

The 51-year-old will succeed Sirleaf – Africa’s first democratically elected female leader – to become president next month, in the country’s first democratic transition since 1944.

Tottenham Desperate To Keep Kane

Tottenham Hotspur are reportedly willing to break through their wage ceiling in order to try to keep record-breaking striker, Harry Kane, at the club.

Earlier this week, the 24-year-old scored a hat-trick against Southampton, setting two new records, and proving his worth to the Spurs.

Kane’s latest hat-trick brought his tally to 39 strikes, the most in a calendar year in Premier League history.

The English international also became the first player to claim six Premier League hat-tricks in a single year.

Kane’s wage of £110,000-per-week, however, is only ranked 35th in the Premier League pay stakes, and is comparatively low in relation to Kane’s top flight peers.

La Liga giants, Real Madrid, are already circling for the record-breaking striker.

In a move to keep him at the club, the Spurs are set to revisit Kane’s contract at the end of the season, offering him a fourth pay increase since August 2014.

The Spurs may not have anything to worry about. Earlier this year, Kane told the media that he would be happy to be a one-club man.

“My goal is to play my entire career only for Tottenham,” he said.

Mnangagwa To Hunt Mugabe’s Allies

Zimbabwe’s President, Emmerson Mnangagwa, has engaged the services of the International Criminal Police Organisation (Interpol) to track down allies of former president, Robert Mugabe.

According to reports, Mnangagwa is targeting Mugabe’s allies who skipped the country when the military toppled the veteran ruler last month.

It’s believed that former ministers Jonathan Moyo, Saviour Kasukuwere and Paddy Zhanda are the new president’s the prime targets, because of alleged corruption-related crimes.

The Zimbabwe Anti-Corruption Commission (ZACC) has already arrested four close Mugabe allies, namely, Joseph Made, Walter Chidakwa, Ignatius Chombo and Jason Machaya.

Former Zanu PF youth leaders Kudzanai Chipanga and Innocent Hamandishe have also been arrested on criminal charges, related to the army takeover.

President Mnangagwa said last week, during his visit to South Africa, that he had forgiven all but three of the vanquished Zanu-PF’s Generation 40 (G40) faction.

G40 was allegedly led by former first lady Grace Mugabe, and was instrumental in forcing Mnangagwa out when he was vice president.

Mnangagwa said: “I have forgiven the cabal and they are in the country except for only three who remain outside, and still saying funny things, but all that will soon come to an end.”

Five Funny Facts You Didn’t Know About Christmas

The festive season is finally here and everyone seems to be relishing in the festive spirit. And while everyone celebrates Christmas and the festive season differently, there are some rather interesting facts about the festive season that you may not have known.

Whether it’s got to do with Christmas trees, reindeer or good ol’ Santa, these are some of the most interesting and funny facts about the festive season.

Christmas trees have been sold in the United States and other Western countries since around 1850. Currently, there are about 21 000 Christmas tree farms in the US. Christmas trees also usually grow for close to 15 years before they are sold.

The first Christmas card was designed by John Callcott Horsley, a British illustrator and was commissioned by Sir Henry Cole.

During the festive season, LEGO sells around 28 sets of their popular building block toys every second.

In the previous century, it used to be a long-standing tradition to tell ghost stories on Christmas Eve.

In Japan, it is tradition to eat Christmas dinner at the local KFC. This is all thanks to a marketing campaign that ran 40 years ago. In fact, KFC is so popular in the country for Christmas dinner, that people have to book their meals at least two months in advance.

As you may know, the story follows Ebenezer Scrooge; a cold hearted, selfish man that eventually learns to accept Christmas and the spirit of the season in heart.

It’s up to you which Christmas Carol you want to watch. There is the latest animation one featuring Jim Carrey, a 90’s comedy version starring Bill Murray and there is even a Muppet version of A Christmas Carol.

Christmas Feast: Potatoes For Everyone!

When it comes to festive season feasts – whether you do a lunch or a dinner – you’re almost guaranteed to find at least one potato dish at any typical household’s Christmas do.

And not that we’re complaining; potatoes are great. Not only are they versatile and inexpensive, they cater for both vegetarians, vegans and meat-eaters.

Therefore, we decided to round-up our top three potato dishes that would be a hit at any festive season feast.

Gourmet Potato Salad

Ingredients:

6 – 10 medium sized potatoes

2 cups organic mayonnaise

½ cup sour cream

1 cup chopped chives

½ cup chopped spring onions

2 tablespoons sugar

Start by peeling the potatoes and either boiling or steaming them until they are soft. Once they are cooked through, let them cool down to room temperature for at least 30 mins.

Proceed to dice your potatoes into cubes.

Once the potatoes have been diced, throw them all into a big mixing bowl. Then start mixing your sauce.

Start by adding the mayonnaise and the sour cream into a bowl and mix well. Then, once the mixture is smooth, cover the potatoes in the large mixing bowl with the sauce and mix well as to cover all the potato cubes.

Then, sprinkle two tablespoons of sugar over the potato mix and mix well.

Chop your chives and spring onions finely and add it to the potatoes and mix well.

Place in the fridge for about an hour and serve cold.

Classic Roast Potatoes

Ingredients

10 – 12 large potatoes

Olive oil

Sea Salt

Black Pepper

4 garlic cloves

1 cup chopped parsley

Start by cutting your potatoes lengthwise in half (you can do quarters if you prefer) and placing them on a baking tray or ovenproof dish.

Pre-heat your oven to 200 degrees celsius.

Drizzle olive oil over the potatoes and coat them liberally with sea salt and black pepper. Make sure they are covered in seasoning on both sides.

Peel four, fresh garlic cloves and place them with the potatoes on the baking tray or in the oven proof dish.

Place the tray or dish in the oven and allow to slow roast for at least one hour. Check on your potatoes and if you want a more crispy skin, let it bake at a lower temperature for another 15 – 20 mins.

Remove from the oven ad sprinkle with more sea salt.

Finely chop a cup of parsley and sprinkle over the potatoes while still hot.

Serve hot.

Zimbabwe: Mugabe’s Airline To Be Blocked

Plans to launch a new airline in Zimbabwe have faced a major setback from the new government.

It was announced in October this year that then-President Robert Mugabe was planning to launch a new private airline, named “Zimbabwe Airways”.

The airline was set to take over from Zimbabwe’s current, struggling, national airline, Air Zimbabwe.

Air Zimbabwe’s current CEO, and son-in-law to Mugabe, Simba Chikore, was tipped to become head of the new airline.

The announcement that the ruling family would own and run a private airline was met with public outrage.

According to reports, the administration of new president, Emmerson Mnangagwa, is likely to prevent the new airline from being established.

A confidential aviation source said: “The deal is now being scrutinised and once that is completed, the president will be advised to block it.”

President Mnangagwa will focus, instead, on revitalising Air Zimbabwe, which is floundering with a hugely-reduced fleet of planes and a debt of more than 300 million US dollars.

Blast From the Past: Old Celebrity Flames

Celebrities these days hook up, break up, and make up at a blinding rate – and we can hardly keep up! We may know who they’re dating now, but who were the hottest couples of the past. Below are some of Hollywood’s (almost) forgotten celebrity relationships.

  1. Katie Holmes and Chris Klein were the hot couple of 2000.
  2. Uma Thurman and Ethan Hawke got married in 1998 but split in 2005.
  3. Matt Damon and Winona Ryder hooked up back in the nineties.
  4. Cher and Tom Cruise got together in the eighties – she was 39 and he was 23!
  5. Sinéad O’Connor and Peter Gabriel were an item in the nineties.
  6. Jude Law and Sienna Miller were lovers in the late 2000s – after he dated Sadie Frost, that is.
  7. We know about Demi and now Mila, but did you know that Ashton Kutcher and January Jones had a fling in 2000.
  8. John Stamos and Paula Abdul hit it up in 1991.
  9. Brooke Shields and Liam Neeson dated for a while, but then Neeson dumped her in 1992…on Christmas day! Really Liam, really?
  10. And last but not least, Brad Pitt and Thandie Newton were the steamiest couple back in 1994. Seems like Brad is a long time fan of flawless counterparts.

Celebrity Secrets: What They Don’t Want You To Know

The life of a celebrity may have its perks – you’re rolling in the dollars, you get special treatment (and all of the free things) wherever you go, you get invited to all of the most prestigious events, etc., etc. However, there’s one thing that money can’t buy you…loyalty.

Below are some secrets that these celebrities hoped you would never find out – and some, for VERY good reason!

  1. Matthew McConaughey gets so excited and ‘turned on’ by food, especially when he is about to eat it, that sometimes, while he is eating, he has to stop and take a break because he feels too overwhelmed.
  2. The late Steve Jobs, founder of Apple, would go and soak his feet in the toilets at Apple HQ when he got stressed.
  3. Johnny Depp suffers from something called coulrophobia – which means he is afraid of clowns. Ironically, he played the Mad Hatter in the Alice in Wonderland films, which kind of resembles a clown.
  4. Nicolas Cage has said that he has done magic mushrooms with his cat…
  5. Justin Timberlake and Ryan Gosling were basically brothers for a while. Ryan lived with Justin and his mother while the two were shooting the Mickey Mouse Club. Justin’s mom even became Ryan’s legal guardian.
  6. Apparently, Kevin Bacon is not a fan of wearing clothes. He has said before that he finds something therapeutic about being nude.
  7. Jason Segel of How I Met Your Mother fame is obsessed with puppets. He allegedly has a whole room in his house full of all kinds of puppets.
  8. She might be a fashion icon, but unbeknownst to many, Coco Chanel was in fact a homophobic social climber who even collaborated with the Nazi’s to achieve social status.
  9. Martin Luther King Junior was a serious Star Trek fan! (Not something we think should be a secret – you go Martin!)
  10. In 1970, Bill Murray attempted (and failed) to smuggle 10 pounds of weed through Chicago’s O’Hare Airport.
  11. Elvis had a major thing for underage girls. Even his future wife Priscilla was only 14 when they met.
  12. Bob Marley’s father was (surprisingly) an unusually small, white, British man, often described as neurotic.
  13. Alfred Hitchcock was horrified by…eggs! He found them the most revolting thing ever.
  14. Alice Cooper is not only a devout Christian, but even runs his own bible study classes.
  15. Andy Warhol was addicted to the today’s equivalent of Adderall.
  16. Not only did Harry Potter have Voldemort to worry about… he also had a drinking problem. Child star, Daniel Radcliffe admitted to his drinking problem while shooting one of the Harry Potter films, but managed to deal with his addiction and has been sober since 2010.
  17. Keith Richards snorted his father’s ashes! What! Yes, you read that correctly. When the rocker’s dad passed away and was cremated, Richards said he couldn’t resist adding a little bit of his dad to a line of cocaine, but that he didn’t think his dad would have minded. Um…okay…

Wow, some of these celebs have some dark pasts. As they (should) say: keep your friends close and your gossip girls closer.
