Classic, Christmas Movies to Watch This Season

Let’s face it; the festive season is never really complete without a serious Christmas movie marathon!

Growing up you probably had your favourite Christmas-themed movie to watch during the festive season, and as you got older, you added more classic Christmas films to your collection.

There is also nothing more satisfying than curling up on the couch and watching a Christmas-inspired film after you’ve stuffed yourself with a Christmas feast.

Here are some of our favourite, classic Christmas films that you need to watch with friends and family this season.

The Polar Express

The Polar Express is perhaps one of the most beautifully animated films ever. It follows the story of a boy who jumps aboard The Polar Express and makes his way to the North Pole to see Santa.

The film also stars Tom Hanks in a variety of roles, so you know the voice acting is superb!

A Christmas Carol / Scrooged

A Christmas Carol is perhaps the most classic of all classic Christmas tales.

The book was written by Charles Dickens in 1834, and has captivated people since its first publication. The book has also been made into several movies, plays and musicals over the years.

As you may know, the story follows Ebenezer Scrooge; a cold hearted, selfish man that eventually learns to accept Christmas and the spirit of the season in heart.

It’s up to you which Christmas Carol you want to watch. There is the latest animation one featuring Jim Carrey, a 90’s comedy version starring Bill Murray and there is even a Muppet version of A Christmas Carol.

Love Actually

Often hailed as one of the best romantic comedies to date, Love Actually is a perfect Christmas-time film; and not only because it plays off during Christmas time.

With a stunning ensemble comprising of the creme de la creme of British actors, including Hugh Grant, Colin Firth, Alan Rickman, Emma Thompson, Keira Knightley and Rowan Atkinson, this film is an absolute treat.

The story follows a few different stories throughout Christmas time and how they interject into one another.

A definite must for the festive season.

So go on and enjoy an evening in front of the TV with your favourite, classic Christmas film!

Blast From the Past: Old Celebrity Flames

Celebrities these days hook up, break up, and make up at a blinding rate – and we can hardly keep up! We may know who they’re dating now, but who were the hottest couples of the past. Below are some of Hollywood’s (almost) forgotten celebrity relationships.

  1. Katie Holmes and Chris Klein were the hot couple of 2000.
  2. Uma Thurman and Ethan Hawke got married in 1998 but split in 2005.
  3. Matt Damon and Winona Ryder hooked up back in the nineties.
  4. Cher and Tom Cruise got together in the eighties – she was 39 and he was 23!
  5. Sinéad O’Connor and Peter Gabriel were an item in the nineties.
  6. Jude Law and Sienna Miller were lovers in the late 2000s – after he dated Sadie Frost, that is.
  7. We know about Demi and now Mila, but did you know that Ashton Kutcher and January Jones had a fling in 2000.
  8. John Stamos and Paula Abdul hit it up in 1991.
  9. Brooke Shields and Liam Neeson dated for a while, but then Neeson dumped her in 1992…on Christmas day! Really Liam, really?
  10. And last but not least, Brad Pitt and Thandie Newton were the steamiest couple back in 1994. Seems like Brad is a long time fan of flawless counterparts.

Celebrity Secrets: What They Don’t Want You To Know

The life of a celebrity may have its perks – you’re rolling in the dollars, you get special treatment (and all of the free things) wherever you go, you get invited to all of the most prestigious events, etc., etc. However, there’s one thing that money can’t buy you…loyalty.

Below are some secrets that these celebrities hoped you would never find out – and some, for VERY good reason!

  1. Matthew McConaughey gets so excited and ‘turned on’ by food, especially when he is about to eat it, that sometimes, while he is eating, he has to stop and take a break because he feels too overwhelmed.
  2. The late Steve Jobs, founder of Apple, would go and soak his feet in the toilets at Apple HQ when he got stressed.
  3. Johnny Depp suffers from something called coulrophobia – which means he is afraid of clowns. Ironically, he played the Mad Hatter in the Alice in Wonderland films, which kind of resembles a clown.
  4. Nicolas Cage has said that he has done magic mushrooms with his cat…
  5. Justin Timberlake and Ryan Gosling were basically brothers for a while. Ryan lived with Justin and his mother while the two were shooting the Mickey Mouse Club. Justin’s mom even became Ryan’s legal guardian.
  6. Apparently, Kevin Bacon is not a fan of wearing clothes. He has said before that he finds something therapeutic about being nude.
  7. Jason Segel of How I Met Your Mother fame is obsessed with puppets. He allegedly has a whole room in his house full of all kinds of puppets.
  8. She might be a fashion icon, but unbeknownst to many, Coco Chanel was in fact a homophobic social climber who even collaborated with the Nazi’s to achieve social status.
  9. Martin Luther King Junior was a serious Star Trek fan! (Not something we think should be a secret – you go Martin!)
  10. In 1970, Bill Murray attempted (and failed) to smuggle 10 pounds of weed through Chicago’s O’Hare Airport.
  11. Elvis had a major thing for underage girls. Even his future wife Priscilla was only 14 when they met.
  12. Bob Marley’s father was (surprisingly) an unusually small, white, British man, often described as neurotic.
  13. Alfred Hitchcock was horrified by…eggs! He found them the most revolting thing ever.
  14. Alice Cooper is not only a devout Christian, but even runs his own bible study classes.
  15. Andy Warhol was addicted to the today’s equivalent of Adderall.
  16. Not only did Harry Potter have Voldemort to worry about… he also had a drinking problem. Child star, Daniel Radcliffe admitted to his drinking problem while shooting one of the Harry Potter films, but managed to deal with his addiction and has been sober since 2010.
  17. Keith Richards snorted his father’s ashes! What! Yes, you read that correctly. When the rocker’s dad passed away and was cremated, Richards said he couldn’t resist adding a little bit of his dad to a line of cocaine, but that he didn’t think his dad would have minded. Um…okay…

Wow, some of these celebs have some dark pasts. As they (should) say: keep your friends close and your gossip girls closer.

2017: Top Earning Musicians

Forbes’ has released its list of the highest-paid musicians of 2017, and the top four are all urban music artists.

Top of the list is rapper, Sean “P Diddy” Combs, who pulled in a career-best of $130 million this year.

While Diddy didn’t release any new music, he made his cash through his Bad Boy Family Reunion Tour, his Ciroc vodka deal and the sale of one-third of his Sean John clothing line.

Behind Diddy, Beyonce took second, Drake placed third, and The Weeknd clinched the fourth spot.

According to Forbes, going on tour plays a large role in the earnings for big-name musicians.

Taylor Swift at number 17 and Jay-Z at number 19 didn’t play many shows this year, which probably accounts for their lower rankings.

In terms of diversity, there are only five women in the top 25, but four of the five top acts are musicians of colour.

The youngest musician making the list is 23-year-old Justin Bieber who placed seventh, and the oldest is 75-year-old Paul McCartney, who placed thirteenth.

See the top 10 here:
1) Diddy ($130m)
2) Beyonce ($105m)
3) Drake ($94m)
4) The Weeknd ($92m)
5) Coldplay ($88m)
6) Guns N’ Roses ($84m)
7) Justin Bieber ($83.5m)
8) Bruce Springsteen ($75m)
9) Adele ($69m)
10) Metallica ($66.5m)

Stars Flee California Fires

A number of A-list celebrities have been forced to evacuate, as thousands of firefighters continue to battle raging wildfires in southern California.

Fanned by strong winds, a series of fires, which broke out on Monday, have swept across 150 square kilometres, destroying homes and buildings in their wake.

Thousands of residents have begun to evacuate, leaving behind their homes and possessions.

Glee starlet, Lea Michele, posted on social media that she had decided not to take any chances with her safety.

She tweeted: “Praying for everyone in LA…grabbed what I loved most this morning and so grateful to my friends for taking us in.”

Socialite Paris Hilton also chose to evacuate, adding that the safety of her pets is her first priority, while Lionel Richie had to cancel a show to help his family escape the blaze.

A number of multi-million dollar mansions in the upmarket neighbourhood of Bel Air, where A-listers including Jennifer Aniston and Beyonce own homes, have already gone up in flames.

Meanwhile, HBO has been forced to halt production on their science fiction TV show, Westworld, due to the set’s close proximity to the fires.

Beyonce Surprises Colin Kaepernick

Beyonce has made her support for National Football League star Colin Kaepernick known.

The 36-year-old Grammy award winner surprised fans and Kaepernick alike by making an appearance at last night’s Sports Illustrated Sportsman of the Year Ceremony.

The singer presented Kaepernick with the Muhammad Ali Legacy Award, which is given annually to an athlete who uses sport as a platform for social change.

Kaepernick sparked controversy in 2016 by kneeling during the American national anthem before a football game, in order to protest police brutality against people of colour in America.

Kaepernick soon became highly polarising as many prominent public figures either expressed support for him or anger over his actions. US President Donald Trump is one of his detractors, saying that his behaviour “disrespects the flag”.

The controversial 30-year-old football player found himself without a team to play for in the 2017 league.

Before handing over the award, Beyonce thanked Kaepernick for his “selfless heart”, his “conviction” and his “personal sacrifice”.

She added: “Colin took action with no fear of consequence or repercussion, only hope to change the world for the better. To change perception, to change the way we treat each other, especially people of colour.”

Kaepernick, who looked visibly star-struck, said that he accepts the award not for himself, but “on behalf of the people”.

When it was announced that Kaepernick had been chosen for the Legacy Award, Muhammad Ali’s widow, Lonnie Ali, said that she supported the decision.

She said: “Like Muhammad, Colin is a man who stands on his convictions with confidence and courage, undaunted by the personal sacrifices he has had to make to have his message heard.”

Bryan Singer Fired from Queen Biopic

The upcoming film about Queen, and its lead singer Freddie Mercury, has lost its director.

Twentieth Century Fox announced in an official statement earlier today that Bryan Singer is no longer attached to “Bohemian Rhapsody”, but did not give a reason for his termination.

According to inside sources, Singer – who directed The Usual Suspects, four X-Men movies and Superman Returns – was fired for “a pattern of unreliable behaviour on the set”.

Earlier this week, production was temporarily shut down so that Singer could attend to “a personal health matter”.

According to reports, the 52-year-old director failed to return to the shoot after the Thanksgiving break.

Unhappiness has been brewing during production for some time, as Singer has failed to show up to the London set on multiple occasions.

The director also repeatedly clashed with the film’s leading man, 36-year-old Rami Malek, who plays Freddie Mercury in the biopic.

Malek, who won an Emmy Award in 2016 for his performance in American TV series Mr. Robot, reportedly complained to the studio about Singer’s unprofessionalism on behalf of the cast.

Last week, sources said that Fox was discreetly looking for directors to replace Singer, even before production was halted.

Singer has denied allegations of unprofessionalism and of conflict with Malek. The director says that with fewer than three weeks left to shoot, he asked Fox for some time off to care for his sick mother, as well as look after his own health.

Singer added: “I wanted nothing more than to be able to finish this project and help honour the legacy of Freddie Mercury and Queen, but Fox would not permit me to do so because I needed to temporarily put my health, and the health of my loved ones, first.”

2017: Biggest Celeb Splits

As 2017 is winding down, let’s take a look back at some the biggest celebrity breakups of the year.

Amber Heard and Elon Musk

The blonde bombshell actress and the South African inventor called it quits in August after one year of dating.

According to insiders, the timing of the relationship wasn’t right for either of them. The pair issued a joint statement regarding the split, blaming their schedules and the long distance.

Anna Faris and Chris Pratt

This adorable couple announced in August that they were splitting up after eight years of marriage. After four months of legal separation, Pratt filed for divorce in December.

The couple said that they had tried hard to make it work, and will continue to be devoted parents to their son, Jack, who was born in 2012.

Fergie and Josh Duhamel

After eight years of marriage, the songstress and hollywood hunk announced that they were calling it quits.

The couple announced in September that they had separated months before, and didn’t give a reason for the split. They share a four-year old son together, named Axl.

Robert Pattinson and FKA Twigs

The Twilight star and musician called off their engagement this year after being together for nearly three years.

While the pair did not make an official statement, reports emerged in October that the couple had called it quits. They made their last public appearance together at the Cannes Film Festival in May.

Selena Gomez and The Weeknd

In the biggest split of the year, the “Fetish” singer and Canadian hip-hop artist ended things in October after just ten months together. The pair blamed distance and clashing schedules, but both have since been seen with their exes.

The Weeknd also abruptly unfollowed Gomez and her family on Instagram, and deleted all of his posts featuring the songstress, last month.

Victoria’s Secret Models Use Racial Slur

A number of white Victoria’s Secret models – known as Angels – are in hot water after a video emerged of them using a racial slur backstage.

Angel Karlie Kloss was filming the girls backstage at their recent Victoria’s Secret runway show in Beijing. The Angels in the video are in their underwear, wearing silk robes, while dancing and singing along to music as they get ready for the show.

However, the clip caused an outpouring of outrage online, because the models appear to sing the n-word as part of the song’s lyrics.

The song in question, “Bodak Yellow” by black female rap artist Cardi B, features the n-word as part of its chorus.

Shortly after Kloss posted the video on her Youtube channel, fans took to social media to voice their anger that a number of white women had felt is appropriate to use the slur.

The argument as to whether white people should be allowed to use the word has raged on for decades, with everyone from celebrities to activists to linguists having their say.

Despite this argument, it’s generally accepted that the use of the word should be reserved for people of colour, and avoided by others.

Cardi B herself retweeted a follower criticizing the Angels for using the term.

The video on Kloss’s Youtube channel appears to have been edited since the backlash, with the offending line removed.

A number of white celebrities have previously drawn controversy and backlash for using the term, including Justin Bieber, Madonna and Gwyneth Paltrow.

This is not the first time that Victoria’s Secret has been hit by racial controversy this year. In February, a video of Angel Gigi Hadid squinting her eyes to imitate a Buddha cookie sparked outrage.

Hadid was banned from entering China to attend the show because of the video.

Disney Casts “Mulan”

Walt Disney Studios has cast Chinese actress Crystal Liu Yifei in the title role of their upcoming live-action version of “Mulan”.

The 30-year-old is already well known in China as an actress, model and singer, and has starred alongside huge names, such as Jackie Chan and Nicolas Cage.

The upcoming film is inspired by the poem “Ballad of Mulan”, in which a young woman pretends to be a man to take her father’s place in the army. The poem also inspired Disney’s 1998 animated musical version.

Disney reportedly searched for a year to find the right Mulan and considered nearly 1000 different actresses for the role.

Yifei has been acting for more than a decade, and won the Golden Lotus Award for Best Actress at the Macau International Movie Festival in 2013.

Several Hollywood studios have faced backlash in recent years for casting white performers to play characters originally intended to be people of colour. Her casting has been hailed as a victory for diversity.

Disney’s live-action Mulan is set for release in 2019.
